Stupid Golf Question

How do I hit a 3 wood?

The ball is on the fairway and the 3 wood looks much less friendly than it did in the bag

Plain answer first

The plain answer

From the turf, play a 3 wood from a good lie and make a smooth, shallow swing that brushes the grass at or just after the ball. Do not try to lift the ball or chop steeply down into it.

The NPG answer

The 3 wood wants a clean sweep from the grass, not an excavation project.

When it matters

It matters on long fairway shots where the lie is clean enough for the wide clubhead to reach the ball.

What to do next

Practice from a good fairway lie with a controlled swing; use a shorter club when the ball is sitting down or the carry is uncomfortable.

Do this next

3-wood vs 5-wood: what is the difference?

A 3-wood usually has less loft and a longer shaft; a 5-wood usually has more loft and can be easier to launch.
