Stupid Golf Question

How should a beginner practice putting?

You have six balls on the practice green and no plan beyond hitting all six

Plain answer first

The plain answer

Practice short putts for start line and longer putts for distance control. You do not need to make every long putt; the goal is to leave the next one close enough to finish.

The NPG answer

Putting practice is mostly teaching the ball to start where you aimed and stop somewhere socially acceptable.

When it matters

It matters when three-putts are adding strokes even though you are getting onto the green well enough.

What to do next

Hit 10 putts from about 3 feet, then roll 10 longer putts while trying to stop each one within a putter length of the hole.

Do this next

What is a lag putt?

A lag putt is a long putt where the goal is to get close, not necessarily make it.
