Stupid Golf Question

What is a chilly dip?

Your chip barely moves and someone says you chilly dipped it

Plain answer first

The plain answer

A chilly dip happens when the club catches the turf before the ball on a chip, pitch, or other short shot. The ground absorbs much of the club speed, so the ball travels only a short distance. It is also called a chunk or fat shot.

The NPG answer

The turf got the useful part of the swing, and the ball received the leftovers.

When it matters

It matters around the green because the ball can finish short while leaving you with nearly the same shot again.

What to do next

On the next practice shot, make a small swing and focus on brushing the turf at or just after the ball.

Do this next

Chip vs pitch shot: what is the difference?

A chip flies lower and rolls more; a pitch flies higher and usually rolls less.
