Stupid Golf Question

What is ball position?

Someone tells you to move the ball back and you are not sure what back means

Plain answer first

The plain answer

Ball position is where the ball sits between your feet at address. Different clubs and shots may use different positions, but it is a setup choice, not where the ball finishes after you hit it.

The NPG answer

It is the ball choosing a parking spot in your stance before the club arrives.

When it matters

It matters because moving the ball forward or back can change where the club meets the ground and the flight you produce.

What to do next

For a basic wedge or short-iron shot, start near the middle of your stance and change one thing at a time from there.

Do this next

Why do I keep topping the ball?

Topping usually means the club is catching the upper half of the ball instead of getting down to it.
