Read a scorecard in layers: tee rows show distance, par gives each hole a scoring baseline, HCP or stroke index allocates handicap strokes, Out and In total the two nines, ratings describe course difficulty, and stat rows can track fairways and greens hit.

When it matters
It matters before choosing tees, while recording scores, and after the round when you want to understand what happened beyond the final total.
